The Descendants of Francis Reid GENERATION II 1. AUGUSTUS H. REID (Frank 1) was born at Waterbury CT in 1857, son of Frank and Mary Reid. [Source?] He died at the age of 27 in August 3, 1884. [MMJ 10, Waterbury Republican, August 4, 1884 Pg 1, also ? Vital Records]. Like Frank (1), some of what we know we can surmise from the general circumstance of Irish working men in Waterbury in the mid 19th century. We also have a brief account from Augustus' daughter Rose (3). A sad story begins with Augustus. We know little of his youth, but he grew up with Frank and Mary in Waterbury and eventually became a mechanic. On November 2, 1880, Augustus married Katherine Mulvaney. Father Lawrence Walsh of the Church of the Immaculate Conception officiated. [Source?] Katherine is a story unto herself, which Roger Reid (6) tells in his history of the Mulvaney family. She is in many ways more relevant to the story of the Reids than is Augustus due to Gus' early death. Katherine was born about 1858, also in Waterbury CT, to Patrick and Rosanna Mulvaney. Her parents stone remains to this day in Old St. Joseph's Cemetary in Waterbury. Her parents were born in Ireland, Catholics, and when Patrick came to the US he worked for a while at the brass mills. Eventually he went own to own his own bakery in the Abrigador. So Katie and Gus were married in 1880, when they were about 23. A son, Francis Augustus Reid (3) was born August 12, 1881. [source?] In April 1883, a daughter was born, and named Anna. At this time they were living at 44 Baldwin St., next door to the bakery. Gus was apparently now working at the bakery. (As of 1994, that block of Baldwin Street had Interstate 84 on top of it. Although much of the rest of the neighborhood is likely much as it was in the 1880's, the Mulvaney/Reid homes are gone). Three months later, on July 10, 1883, Anna died of Cholera Infantum. [MMJ 10, Waterbury CT Vital Records]. Then, on August 3, 1884 Augustus died, a victim of alcoholism. The story was told like this in next day's paper: Waterbury Republican, Aug 4, 1884, Pg 1 DEAD WITH HIS CHILD BY HIS SIDE When Mrs. Augustus H. Reid of No. 44 Baldwin Street returned home yesterday from early mass she found her husband lying dead upon his bed with his little two year old child innocently playing with his face. Reid has been in poor health for some time but being better yesterday told his wife he could take care of the baby while she went to church. He died of paralysis of the head. He was 27 years old. I am told that "paralysis of the head" is what we would call a stroke today. According to [source?], he died "of the drink". At the time of Gus' death, Katie was two months pregnant with Rose (3). It is Rose who gives us the most personal picture of Gus, but she did not know him personally. Her recollections should be understood as her memory of what she was told by her mother, years after her father's death. According to Rose (3) [RRG 1,2]: "A talented, gifted, handsome violinist. His marriage [to Rose] was a very happy, deeply devoted one." Issue: i. Francis Augustus Reid (3) b. Waterbury August 12, 1881 d. Danbury CT Feb 27, 1963 mar.(?) Elsie Porter ii. Anna b.
